1 comments about Whistling in the Dark: Memory and Culture in Wartime London.
- It should be made clear that this book is a doctoral dissertation, not a history book! As a student of the Second World War II, I found the book a good read with interesting arguments. In fact, I strongly recommend this book to all serious students of this time period and British scholars but not to the general reader. It has no significant historical contexts. Instead Ms. Freedman presents a long-debated or new topic about wartime London and gives her own opinions on the matter rather than present historical facts. I purchased this book from Amazon with the hope that it would give me insight on how London went from the days of the Blitz, to the interactions with the American GI's prior the invasion, to the final days of victory in May 1945. There is nothing like this in the book. This is why I rated this book so low; because I didn't get what I expected not because it wasn't a good read. If you're an advanced student on the subject, by all means buy the book. If you just want historical insight of the time (to make up your own judgements) then do not buy this book. It is a waste of your time and money.

1 comments about A Little History of the English Country Church.
- This book brought to life the succession of historical movements in the church- political, liturgical, theological- and how they shaped the way churches looked and functioned. I found this book a delightfully easy read with lots of helpful pictures and diagrams. I bought several additional copies for friends! It's that good.

1 comments about The History of Myddle (Penguin Classics).
- This is a difficult book to read because it is written in old English but it is worth the read.
